Wandering Teacher - That's what I am!
As I was pondering what to call this blog, I thought about the adventures I've been on and realize that many have to do with my being a teacher. I taught in Taiwan for a year, I travelled around the United States last year and I am now heading off to Japan to learn about Japanese math instruction. They all somehow come back to how I see the world through the eyes of learning and teaching.
Next Friday, June 14th, I'll be flying off to Tokyo to be part of Project IMPULS through Gakugei University. Basically it's an international opportunity for teachers to learn about Japanese Lesson Study which is where teachers work collaboratively to plan, create, implement and observe math instruction. I know, for some of you this sounds like the worst thing ever. MATH?! Hell no!!
I get it; there is a lot of math phobia out there and so many believe they are terrible at math. I wish I could help you believe that this isn't true. Math is truly a beautiful thing. But I digress, that conversation is for another place and time (over many cocktails).
At the request of several friends, I've decided to blog about my new adventure - 3 weeks in Japan! Although a big chuck of time will be learning about math instruction, during that process I get to visit local schools, work with Japanese teachers and students and also learn about and explore different parts of Japan. After the project is done, I'll be traveling for another 9 days to explore other parts of Japan like Kyoto, Osaka, Nara and hopefully Hiroshima. Blogging is a good way to keep a record of my adventures while sharing it with the people I care about the most.
I fly from Boston to Toronto to Narita next Friday. It's a long (and I mean LONG) way to go and I know I'll want to jump out of the plane at some point into that 12+ hour leg but I'm giving myself a couple of nights to recover from the 13 hour time difference before I have to check-in for the program. My hope is that the flight is this:
Not this:
But since I don't sleep much, if at all, during flights, I'm hoping I can get up and walk around as much as possible. Fingers crossed there are a lot of good movies to watch.
I hope you join me on my new adventure as I learn, explore, meet new people, and eat and drink my way around a country that has been in the top 3 of my life bucket list since I was a teenager. Get ready Japan, I'll be there soon!!
