Day 1 - from Narita to Tokyo

I wish I slept on planes. I'm not a great sleeper in general and am envious of anyone who can sleep on planes, trains...anywhere. Over 12 hours flying from Montreal to Narita and at one point, every single person in my section was asleep. I was up walking around and adjusting/readjusting in my seat on a regular schedule. Damn you sleep! At least I caught up on some movies I hadn't seen.

Today, on the trains from Narita Station to Kokubunji Station, it took about 2 1/2 hours and I'd say a good portion of the people around me fell asleep. Come on! How can you sleep on a moving train? Beats me!

Anyway, got to Narita at around 3:30 p.m. here (that would be 2:30 a.m. on the east coast). By the time I got through customs, collected my Japan Rail pass, picked up my pocket Wifi and found the shuttle to the hotel, I checked in at 5:30. I was sore and so tired but decided jumping into bed would be crazy so I went and had dinner instead - sushi of course! Look at this gorgeous food!

It was the perfect decision because I was in bed, in a dark cold room, asleep by 8:30 and slept, off and on, until 6:00 a.m. I felt like a champ! Got dressed, made a cup of tea (Japan is just so civilized) and had a breakfast of a lifetime. It was the most impressive buffet I've ever experienced at a hotel. Delish!!

Packed up and figured out my way to the hotel I'll be staying at for the next 10 nights. The hotel shuttle drove by this hotel on the way to the train station. It's a little fuzzy but this is a Christmas hotel. Ummm...okay.

I took 3 different trains into Kokobunji Station (which is west of downtown Tokyo). It started out like this....
 and turned into this....
I only made one mistake where I got on the wrong train but figured it out right away, made my way back one stop and got to where I was going. The train system here is no joke. When they say 2:13, they get there at 2:13. There wasn't one train that left before or after the designated time.

I'm staying right near the Kokobunji train station at this quaint hotel called JR-East Hotel Mets. Like most Japanese style hotels, the rooms are really small but has everything I need. Honestly, it's not like I'll be spending a lot of time in the room.

We start bright and early in the morning with a 6:00 a.m. walk around the neighborhood. See you tomorrow!!
